Motoring organisation ANWB has had to deal with fewer holidaymakers getting into trouble abroad this year, as more people opt to holiday at home.

The number of requests for help made from popular foreign holiday destinations is down 40% so far, spokesman Markus van Tol told news website Nu.nl.

By contrast, the organisation is dealing with far more problems at home. ‘We are already on 94% of what we do in a normal summer, and it is far from over,’ Van Tol told the website.

So far the ANWB has carried out 160 car repairs in France. Top of the list of issues is the car losing power or juddering, followed by emergency warning lights coming on and tyre problems.
