Tropical temperatures of up to 34 Celsius are expected in parts of the Netherlands on Friday, and local officials are warning some roads to the beach may be closed to keep the number of day trippers manageable.

The highest temperatures will be in the south and east, while it could be as warm as 25 degrees on the Wadden Sea islands in the north. Public health institute RIVM has also warned of the risk of smog developing in places.

There may be some overnight storms in the south and Saturday will start off cloudy, although the sun will break through at times. There may also be more storms, as the temperature hits 27 Celsius in the south.

Sunday will be cooler, with cloud and sunny spells and temperatures in the low 20s. There is little change into next week, although it will be warmer again by Friday.

Strong currents

Meanwhile, sea rescue workers are warning swimmers to watch out for rip currents – strong and highly localised currents between two sandbanks, which have already caused problems on Texel and Bergen aan Zee.

Three teenagers were rescued from a rip current at Callantsoog in Noord Holland on Thursday.
