Rotterdam mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb has been nominated for a third term in office, to run until 2027.

A majority of Rotterdam councillors voted to keep him as mayor for another six-year term on Thursday night and his nomination has been officially reported to the king’s commissioner Jaap Smit, Dutch media reported.

The nomination was no surprise, although the proportion of votes that he won will not be publicly revealed. He started as mayor in 2009, and it is rare for a public figure to be renominated for such a long term.

Aboutaleb has taken a tough stance during the coronavirus to protect public health, and was one of the voices appealing for more local powers.
