A 52-year-old woman from Zwolle was killed by a falling tree while out cycling with her partner during Wednesday evening’s heavy storms, broadcaster NOS reported.

As yet is is unclear if the tree blew over or if it was hit by lightning, NOS said.

The KNMI weather bureau had issued code yellow weather warnings ahead of the storms, which also caused flash flooding in places.

In Vlissingen, 16 apartments were evacuated after water poured in into the block, when 60 milimetres of rain fell in a short period, Omroep Zeeland said. Dozens of people throughout the south contacted the emergency services with reports of flooded cellars.

The KNMI says the weather will be changeable for the next few days, with temperatures around 20 Celsius, occasional showers and some sunny periods.

From Sunday on, there will be a return to dry, sunny weather, and by Wednesday it could hit 28 Celsius inland. The KNMI expects this to continue towards the end of the month.
