Royal bake off: Queen Máxima shares favourite birthday biscuit recipe
Queen Máxima has delighted lovers of the royal family and Argentinian baking by posting the results of her favourite recipe to mark her birthday.
The Dutch queen, who was marking her 49th yesterday, posted an image of her special bake – alfajores caramel biscuits – on Instagram, alongside the recipe.
‘I’m celebrating my birthday at home in these times with some typical Argentinian goodies: alfajores made with dulche de leche,’ she wrote. ‘I grew up with alfajores and they are my favourite biscuits! I bake them with my mother’s recipe, which I am sharing with you all so that you can bake them at home too!’
The queen’s mother Maria del Carmen is currently staying with her in the Netherlands and – NOS suggests – may have had a hand in choice of the bake.
The queen posted pictures of the various stages, although baking buffs noted that she neglected to take off her many royal rings while rubbing in the butter and flour.
The biscuits involve a shortbready dough which is baked, sandwiched around the milky caramel treat, dulche de leche, and then rolled in desiccated coconut.
Royal programme Blauw Bloed reproduced the recipe in an easier to read format, while at the time of writing the Queen’s treats had received warm compliments and almost 100,000 Instagram likes.
