The Dutch official death toll from coronavirus rose by 52 to 5,562 in Wednesday’s update by the public health institute RIVM. The number of people hospitalised for treatment also rose by 52, taking the total to 11,430, the RIVM said.

A further 227 people have tested positive for the virus, bringing the official number of positive tests to 43,211, although the real total is likely to be far higher.

The RIVM has also published research showing 80% to 85% of the Dutch have confidence in the information provided by the health agency and in the government’s approach to tackling the crisis.

Ten weeks on from the start of the crisis, the research also shows four in 10 people are worried about their own health and six in 10 are concerned about the health of family members. These figures are well down on the previous survey, which was carried out at the end of March.

In the DutchNews.nl survey 40% also said they were worried about the impact of coronavirus on their own health, but almost seven in 10 were concerned about friends and family overseas.
