Ireen Wüst, Patrick Roest take world allround speed skating titles, again

Dutch speed skaters Ireen Wüst and Patrick Roest were both crowned world allround champions at the World Championships in Hamer, Norway on Sunday.

Wüst won her seventh world title in the event, which involves races over 500m, 1,500m, 3km and 5km. Ivanie Blondin of Canada took silver and the bronze went to  Dutch woman Antoinette de Jong.

‘I can’t believe it,’ Wüst, 33, said after the final 5km race. ‘It was a very exciting tournament… It as a long time ago that I last skated a five kilometres but I thought, “I’ll just go for it”. And it was one of my better ones.’

Roest, 24, who has held the the title since 2018, beat Norway’s Sverre Lunde Pedersen and Seitaro Ichinohe of Japan into silver and bronze positions. The men’s competition involves races of 500m, 1,500m, 5km and 10km.
