Stroopwafels are finding favour among US basketball players

American league basketball players have a new favourite high calory snack – the humble stroopwafel, according to the Washington Post.

The paper says the stroopwafel, ‘a favourite snack of the Netherlands’ has ‘permeated the NBA’.

Dallas Mavericks player Kristaps Porzingis is a fan, the paper says, and the Dutch treat, made with organic honey, is the secret of his halftime routine. ‘Every game,’ he told the paper. ‘They’re delicious.’

Minnesota Timberwolves forward Robert Covington has also been spotted eating them and says he eats as many as five a day. The Knicks too keep boxes of them in their weight room.

The stroopwafels going down a storm in the US are, however, probably of local manufacture. One company, Honey Stinger, told the paper it sells its performance-boosting waffles and honey energy products to 18 NBA organisations.
