The number of people visiting the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam this year hit a record 2.7 million people, according to figures from the Dutch Museum Association.

The Van Gogh museum and the Anne Frank House were runners-up on the most-visited list with 2.1 million and 1.3 million visitors respectively.

Science museum NEMO and the Stedelijk Museum shared a joint fourth place with 670,000 visitors.

Many of the additional visitors to the Rijksmuseum this year came from the Netherlands, attracted by three blockbuster shows about Rembrandt.

‘Over a million of visitors to the museum are Dutch and that is up from last year. We have 40% Dutch and 60% foreign visitors,’ museum director Taco Dibbits said.

The Van Gogh Museum scored big among Dutch visitors with the Hockney – Van Gogh: The Joy of Nature exhibition. Of the 360,000 visitors 137,000 were from the Netherlands.

Only the Anne Frank House drew fewer national visitors. ‘We think some 10% of visitors are from the Netherlands,’ director Ronald Leopold told broadcaster NOS. ‘The long queues outside the museum might not act as an encouragement but if you buy your ticket online you can just walk in.’

At the same time, however, smaller museums are coming under pressure, the Museum Association said. ‘Local authority subsidies are being cut and they have less money to put on attractive exhibitions,’ the association said.
