Fewer shops in Dutch high streets as internet shopping continues to boom

The number of shops in the Netherlands has gone down by 11% over the past 10 years, according to new figures from national statistics agency CBS.
At the beginning of this year there were 86,000 retail outlets in the Netherlands, compared with 97,000 at the beginning of 2010.
The downturn is due to the shift towards online shopping, with electronics, shoes, books and sports shops among those most seriously affected, the CBS said. The number of shops selling baby and children’s clothes has shrunk by 50%.
At the same time, the number of supermarkets and garden centres has increased, the CBS said. There are also more furniture stores and phone shops and little change in the number of specialist grocery stores.
The CBS says 79% of the Dutch over-12 have bought something online at some point.
