The population of the Netherlands will grow to around 19 million by 2039 while the number of people aged 80 and over will double, according to new growth estimates drawn up by national statistics agency CBS.

The forecasts are based on mathematical models, based on expected birth, death, immigration and emigration rates, the CBS says.

Much of the growth – which is estimated at 105,000 a year – will be due to immigration. The CBS forecasts that nearly 300,000 people will move to the Netherlands on an annual basis, while 214,000 – mainly returning immigrants – will leave.

In addition, for the next 10 years at least, more babies will be born than people die, but that is expected to slow past the year 2030, the CBS said.

The current Dutch population is around 17.4 million strong, of whom around 25% have immigrant roots. That is forecast to rise to 39% by 2060, when the population will reach almost 20 million, the CBS said.

The CBS classifies someone as having a migrant background if at least one of their parents was born abroad.

The agency will publish new prognoses about changes in the Dutch immigrant population next year.
