Tata Steel to cut 3,000 jobs in Europe, IJmuiden impact still unclear
Steel company Tata Steel has confirmed that up to 3,000 jobs are to be cut across its European operations but it remains unclear how many will go at the company’s IJmuiden steelworks.
A spokesman for the works council says between 1,500 and 1,600 jobs will be scrapped in the Netherlands, but the company has not confirmed that figure.
Most of the jobs being eliminated are office functions, the company said.
News of the company’s plans to slash spending in Europe by €830m first leaked out last month.
The IJmuiden plant has a workforce of some 9,000 and is one of the most modern steel works in Europe. It focuses on making steel for the car and packaging industries.
