Tata Steel in IJmuiden may bear brunt of €830m cost-cutting measures
Hundreds of jobs may be lost at the Tata Steel plant in IJmuiden as part of the company’s plans to slash spending in Europe by €830m.
The Dutch plant is the biggest in the company’s European operations and up to 2,500 jobs across the continent could be under threat, unions say.
News of the cost cutting plan leaked out to local newspaper NH Nieuws on Monday and details are still sketchy. More clarity about where the jobs will go is likely next month.
The memo did say that Tata Steel Nederland would have to contribute ‘a large part of this amount or €170m in cost savings’.
The IJmuiden plant has a workforce of some 9,000 and is one of the most modern steel works in Europe. It focuses on making steel for the car and packaging industries.
