After a difficult start in the competition, the Dutch women’s hockey team have taken the European title for the 10th time, beating Germany 2-0 in the final in Antwerp on Sunday.
The win also guarantees Oranje a place in the Tokyo Olympics next year. The Olympic title is the only one not held by the women, who are current European, World and Pro League title holders.
‘This was a fantastic year and we can’t wait for Tokyo,’ captain Eva de Goede said after the match. ‘This team is full of self confidence, even when things go wrong and that is pretty impressive.’
The Dutch men’s team, defending European champions, had to be content with the bronze medal. The men’s title went to Belgium.
