Most Dutch not concerned about fake news, NOS most trusted brand
The Dutch are again the least concerned about fake news on the internet is a survey of 38 countries by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism.
Brazil tops the list – 85% of Brazilians are concerned about fake news stories online, compared with just 31% of the Dutch who took part in the survey.
‘Although overall trust numbers are slightly lower in 2019, the Netherlands still has relatively high levels of trust in news from mainstream news organisations,’ the survey said. Public broadcaster NOS remains the most trusted brand.
The report also points out that the government, ‘faced with fears about disinformation, has been encouraging its citizens to read critically’ and in March launched a campaign to raise awareness of disinformation.
Research in the Netherlands has shown that videos from far right parties PVV and Forum voor Democratie are recommended on YouTube three times as often as videos from all other Dutch political parties combined, the report said.
The report also showed that the number of people prepared to pay for news is increasing, but that more people are opting for one rather than multiple subscriptions. In the Netherlands, 11% of people said they had paid for news in the past year.
