People caught driving mopeds on Amsterdam’s cycle path network face a fine of €104 from Monday, almost two months since the ban was introduced.
City officials decided not to bring in fines when the ban was imposed on April 8, to give moped users time to get used to the changes. In total 12 extra street wardens, including four on motorbikes, have been brought in to catch moped users who don’t stick to the new rules.
The ban on small mopeds with a top speed of 25 km/h and known as snorfietsen, is an attempt to ease congestion and improve safety on the city’s streets. The new regulation requires blue-plate mopeds to use the main roadway in around 80% of the area inside the A10 ring road. Riders will also have to wear a helmet.
Around 42,000 people have signed a petition calling for mopeds to be allowed to stay on cycle paths, on the grounds that making them share the road with cars and lorries will be less safe.
