Weather forecasters are warning that May 5 could be the coldest Liberation Day in nearly 30 years, with temperatures struggling to reach double figures.

A cold front is expected to sweep in from the north on Friday, bringing the temperature down as low as 7 degrees over the weekend. The average for early May is around 16.

Weeronline said there was an outside chance of snow showers for the annual commemoration of the war dead on Saturday. Sunday is likely to be drier with sunshine in the afternoon, but anyone attending Bevrijdingsdag festivals is advised to wrap up warm.

‘If you’re going to a festival, wear a thick coat or keep warm by regularly jumping and dancing,’ advised the agency on its website.

A total of 14 outdoor events are taking place across the country featuring artists such as Maan, Kraantje Pappie and DJ Sam Feldt.

The last time temperatures were as low as 9 degrees on May 5 was in 1991, while in 2012 10.1 degrees was recorded at De Bilt.
