Amsterdam souvenir shop owner tripped up by hallucinogenic truffles

Four souvenir shops in Amsterdam have been shut down after council inspectors were offered hallucinogenic truffles.

The inspectors were served the psychoactive treats as they entered one of the shops during a routine check on business premises in Dam Square.

The council followed up by ordering simultaneous inspections of 11 souvenir shops, four of which were found to have illegal drugs on the premises. ‘We discovered that the owner of the shop ran a number of souvenir shops in the city centre,’ said a spokeswoman for the district council.

Unlike Amsterdam’s ‘coffeeshops’, or cannabis cafes, souvenir stalls are not licensed to sell or serve hallucinogenic products.

The Telegraaf newspaper reported that the truffles bought by the inspectors had been locked away for safe keeping. A decision on how to dispose of them will be taken at a later stage.
