The Netherlands must do more on renewable energy: EU commissioner

The Netherlands needs to come up with a new plan to boost the amount of renewable energy it produces, a senior Brussels official says in Monday’s NRC newspaper.

Miguel Cañete, the European commissioner for climate action and energy, told the paper in an interview that he is ‘very concerned’ about the proportion of renewables in total energy production in the Netherlands.

Figures from the European statistics agency Eurostat published earlier this year show the Netherlands is trailing the rest of Europe when it comes to reaching sustainable energy targets.

In 2017, just 6.6% of the energy used in the Netherlands came from sustainable sources, but the target is 14% by 2020. The Dutch environmental agency PBL forecasts the Netherlands will reach 12% next year.

‘If you look at the current figures, you can see that the Netherlands has the biggest gap between the current situation and the target,’ he said. ‘Eleven members states have already reached the 2020 target, and 10 are almost there. But seven will have to make more of an effort.’
