The rate of inflation in the Netherlands climbed to 2.9% in March, the third highest in the eurozone and double the region’s average, according to new figures from European statistics agency Eurostat.

Annual inflation fell to 1.4% in the euro area and is stable in the EU as a whole at 1.6%. The lowest annual rates were recorded in Portugal (0.8%) and Greece (1%).

In particular, the cost of food and energy put up inflation in the Netherlands, according to domestic statistics agency CBS. Food prices rose because of the increase in the lower rate of valued added tax to 9%.

The cost of energy in the Netherlands, meanwhile, has risen almost 17% year-on-year, following increases in gas prices and energy taxes.
