Wind and heavy rain set to cause travel misery all week
KLM cancelled dozens of flights on Monday morning as strong winds and heavy showers were forecast to hit the country for the next week.
The meteorological office KNMI has issued a Code Yellow warning across the country as winds of up to 80 km/h are expected to blow in from the north-west. Rain, hail and even snow could fall in some areas on Monday.
KLM said it had cancelled 72 flights from Amsterdam to European destinations because of the weather. Schiphol currently has restricted capacity because one of its five runways is closed for maintenance work.
On Sunday emergency services received 1,350 call-outs as storms brought down trees and branches. The problems were worst in the southern provinces, with trains cancelled south of Roermond and in parts of Brabant in the latter part of the day.
Two people were reported to have been injured: a man in Geldrop who was hurt when a tree fell on his car and a man in Valkenswaard who was blown off a roof while trying to carry out repairs. He was taken to hospital with a back injury.
In The Hague the annual City-Pier-City 10K race was cancelled because of the conditions. Organisers said it would be ‘irresponsible’ to allow 40,000 runners to take part in the event when winds of up to 120 km/h were forecast on the coast.
Weather bureau Weeronline said the wet and blustery weather was set to continue for the rest of the week, with heavy rain arriving on Wednesday. Temperatures will be around 9 to 10 degrees, although on higher ground in Limburg they could drop as low as 1 degree, bringing a chance of light snow.
