Airline KLM said on Monday it had scrapped 72 European flights in an effort to keep intercontinental flights running to schedule in today’s forecast strong winds. Schiphol airport is also warning that some flights are subject to cancellations and delays.

The KNMI weather bureau says westerly to south-westerly winds of up to 90 kph are battering the Netherlands on Monday morning and will hit again in the late afternoon. The KNMI has issued a code yellow weather warning for the entire country.

The wind caused some problems on the morning’s rush hour roads. There were long delays on the A27 heading for Breda after a lorry trailer roof blew off and on the A29, trees have been blown down, leading to lane closures.

The strong winds have also had an impact on train travel, with some cancellations on the high speed service from Rotterdam to Breda. The track between Roosendaal and Dordrecht has also been closed after trees were brought down.

The wind may also have an impact on some of the carnival processions planned in the south for later in the day, local paper Brabants Dagblad said.
