Telecom operator KPN is dropping its brand names Telfort, Telfort Zakelijk, XS4ALL and Yes Telecom to focus on the KPN brand.

This ‘will allow us to expand our services with the best elements of these special brands, such as the high level of service offered by XS4ALL and the affordable discount services of Telfort,’ KPN’s consumers telecom chief Jean-Pascal Van Overbeke said in a statement.

XS4ALL was started in 1993 by four students after they lost access to the university internet network. It grew rapidly and was bought by KPN in 1998 but remained an independent entity within the group.

Despite being part of the former state telecoms giant, XS4ALL managed to retain its independent character and has been at the centre of several court cases including one involving Scientology.

Supporters of the company have set up an online petition calling on KPN to reconsider.
