2018’s long, hot summer led to a record number of lifeboat call-outs, with the total rising almost 20% to 2,508.

The number of people rescued after they got into difficulties in the sea or in lakes and rivers rose 22% to 4,313, the Dutch lifeboat association KNRM said on Tuesday.

Half the rescues took place in June, July and August and most – 166 – took place at the seaside resort of Scheveningen.
