The relatively new province Flevoland had the fastest growing regional economy in the Netherlands last year, according to new figures from the national statistics office CBS.

The CBS put Flevoland’s economic growth at 4.2%, almost a full percentage point above Noord-Holland and Noord-Brabant which were joint second on the list. Utrecht was in third place with economic growth of 3.2%.

The northern province of Groningen was the only area where the economy contracted, shrinking 0.5%. The CBS said that is due to the gradual downturn in natural gas production.

Earlier this year, the CBS said that Almere, the biggest population centre in Flevoland, was the fastest growing economic area in the Netherlands, alongside the Eindhoven region.

The the CBS said Almere’s economy grew 144% between 1996 and 2016, compared with average national growth of 50%. Its population has gone up by 75% and the number of jobs by 90% over the same period.
