Unilever’s chief executive Paul Polman will retire at the end of this year after almost 10 years in the top job, the company announced on Thursday.

Polman will be replaced by Alan Jope, 54, the current head of the company’s beauty and personal care division. Jope, a Scottish national, joined the company as a graduate trainee in 1985.

Polman’s reputation took a hit earlier this year when he first announced the company would consolidate its dual headquarter set-up in Rotterdam but later reversed that decision because of objections from shareholders.

Polman will remain attached to the company for the first six months of 2019 to ensure a smooth changeover.
