Amstelveen expects the size of its Indian population to double to 10,000 over the next five years, alderman Floortje Gordon is quoted as saying by the Financieele Dagblad.

Amstelveen’s Indian community makes up the biggest group of non-nationals in the town, which has a population of 90,000, Gordon said. She made the comments during last weekend’s Diwali festival on the town’s main square.

Some 1,500 Japanese nationals make up the next biggest foreign population group and they are followed by the Chinese. In total, about 18% of Amstelveen’s population does not have a Dutch passport.

Gordon puts the size of the Indian community down to the presence of international schools and several large Indian employers, including RCS and Wipro.

It is unclear as yet what impact the government’s plans to cut the 30% expat ruling will have on the Indian community. Some 750 of the 4,500 people who took part in the recent ICAP poll on the plans were Indian nationals.
