Last Saturday night was the coldest September night on record, with the temperature dipping below 0.1 degrees at the De Bilt weather station near Utrecht.

The coldest spot in the Netherlands was the Twenthe airforce base, where the temperature fell to -1.5 degrees, weather forecaster Weerplaza said.

The dip into freezing temperatures was due to the combination of cold air and a zone of high pressure, which allows the evenings to chill rapidly, Weerplaza said.

This week, Monday and Tuesday will be overcast with light showers, but it will be dry with sunny spells in the run up to the weekend. Temperatures will hover around 15 to 17 degrees during the day.
