Car maker Nedcar cuts 1,000 jobs as BMW reduces production
Car maker VDL Nedcar is cutting some 1,000 of its 7,000 jobs because BMW is cutting production at the plant in Born, broadcaster NOS said on Friday.
BMW is the only company which VDL works for and has been hit by declining demand. VDL produces some 220,000 cars a year for BMW and the size of the reduction still has to be finalised, NOS said.
The job losses were first revealed by local paper De Limburger on Wednesday but the company refused to confirm the report and local unions said they were unaware of the job losses.
A spokesman told NOS on Friday the company is cutting the workforce by some 500 flexible staff who are brought in for peak periods. In addition, the contracts of 200 supply workers will end in January and a further 300 members of staff will leave ‘of their own accord’.
The UWV jobs agency said there are few opportunities for car workers in the region, and the engineering and logistics sectors are particularly tight.
