Storm causes few problems in the Netherlands, winds not as strong as forecast

Thursday night’s strong winds and storms caused few problems in the Netherlands and the wind was not as strong as had been forecast. The strongest gust – 102 kph – was record on the dyke between Enkhuizen and Lelystad.

Schiphol airport cancelled 90 flights because of the strong winds, which meant only one runway could be used, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded. All affected passengers were rebooked on new flights on Thursday and Friday, the airport authority said.

Flash flooding caused problems in some areas and several trees were brought down but few problems on the roads were reported.

It will remain windy on Friday, particularly in coastal areas, and thunder is possible later in the day, weather bureau KNMI said. The temperature will be around 20 degrees in most places.

The weekend will be a mixture of sunny spells and showers but it will be warmer on Sunday, the KNMI said.
