D66, ChristenUnie will support plan to scrap dividend
Two of the four parties in the current coalition government said on Thursday they would support plans to scrap the tax on dividends, despite mounting opposition among MPs.
The decision, which will cost the treasury as much as €2bn a year, is necessary to make sure foreign firms continue to locate to the Netherlands, prime minister Mark Rutte reiterated last week.
‘I signed the coalition agreement and I will keep my word,’ ChristenUnie leader Geert-Jan Segers told broadcaster NOS. ‘It is a major compromise.’ D66 leader Alexander Pechtold also said that the plan is ‘included in the coalition agreement’ and that he will support it when the budget is debated next month.
The four coalition party leaders met cabinet ministers earlier on Thursday to discuss the 2019 spending plans which will be presented to parliament on September 18.
