Freezing weather ahead, Dutch gear up for outdoor skating
Cold air streaming into the Netherlands over the weekend will lead to heavy frosts over most of the country next week, weather forecasters say.
Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday temperatures will go down to at least -5 degrees overnight, leading to some five centimetres of ice in central parts of the country.
The news of a period of frost has already led to speculation about the possibility of skating outdoors, with the Telegraaf telling its readers that they can get their skates ready – if enough farmers flood a field.
The water in the country’s lakes is too warm to freeze over instantly, so outdoor skating rinks and frozen fields offer the best chances of skating outdoors, the paper said. At least 10 centimetres of ice is needed for safe skating on lakes and canals.
The KNMI weather bureau sees the frost continuing throughout the week and says there is an 80% chance of ‘very cold’ weather continuing, coupled with wintry showers.
