Appongeluk – to have a traffic accident while using instant messaging service Whatapp – is the 2017 word of the year according to the Van Dale dictionary group.

Appongeluk took 20% of the 70,000 votes in the online poll. Fipronilei – egg containing the pesticide fipronil – was second and regenboogtaal – literally rainbow language but meaning gender neutral language – was third.

Other nominated words on the list included cryptokoorts – the ‘gold rush’ created by bitcoin and the like – and lokterrorist – someone who poses as a terrorist to unmask others.
