18 millionth Dutch inhabitant will be born in 2031: CBS
The population of the Netherlands will reach 18.4 million by 2060, the national statistic office CBS said on Tuesday.
Three years ago, the CBS put the 2060 population at 18.1 million. The agency says the new figure is due to an increase in migration and the rise in life expectancy, as more elderly people live longer than forecast.
The agency says that from 2030, more people will die than are being born and the population growth will come from migration. This year, 23% of the population have some form of ‘foreign’ roots but this will rise to 34% by 2060.
Over the past 10 years, there has been a ‘strong increase’ in migration for work or to study from the EU and Asia while immigration from traditional countries such as Morocco, Turkey and Suriname is falling.
The population of the Netherlands is currently 17 million and was just 13 million 50 years ago.
The CBS also says that its forecasts contain a ‘high degree of uncertainty’ and that after 2040 the population can either grow or shrink. However, the 18 millionth inhabitant of the Netherlands will be born in 2031, the CBS said.
