Anti-Muslim Dutch video retweeted by Trump is fake news

November 29, 2017

A video retweeted by US president Donald Trump which is said to show a Muslim beating up a Dutch boy on crutches is fake news, according to the Telegraaf and shockblog GeenStijl.

Trump retweeted three postings by British far right activist Jayda Fransen, including one said to show a ‘Muslim migrant beats up Dutch boy on crutches’. All were said to show ‘sensitive material’ and were flagged up by Twitter.

The Dutch video was originally posted on shockblog Dumpert in May but was removed on the request of the police. According to GeenStijl, the incident took place in Monnickendam and the 16-year-old perpetrator, who was arrested, is neither a migrant or a Muslim but an ‘ordinary Dutchman’.

Fransen is the deputy leader of Britain First, founded in 2011 by former members of the far-right British National Party (BNP). She responded to Trump’s retweets by proclaiming: ‘Donald Trump himself has retweeted these videos and has around 44 million followers!’

The Dutch embassy in Washington later tweeted a rebuke to the president, stating that ‘facts do matter’.

.@realDonaldTrump Facts do matter. The perpetrator of the violent act in this video was born and raised in the Netherlands. He received and completed his sentence under Dutch law.
