One million men and nearly two million women in the Netherlands were not economically independent in 2016, according to a new report by the national statistics office CBS published on Wednesday.

Nevertheless, 27% of the men and 35% of the women who are said to be financially vulnerable did have a job, the CBS said.

Nearly two-thirds of the financially vulnerable men claimed social security benefits, as did two third of women. But almost a quarter of the women had no income at all – nearly all were married or living with a partner on whom they were dependent. Another quarter of the women were employed but worked too few hours to be considered  independent.

Single men were more than twice as likely as single women to be economically vulnerable.
