Winds of up to storm force 10 batter the Dutch coast, bringing down trees
The autumn storm battering the west coast of the Netherlands has brought down trees and tipped over lorries, with winds of up to storm force 10 recorded in IJmuiden and on the Wadden Sea island of Vlieland.
In Amstelveen, a driver was seriously injured when a tree blew onto his car and another driver in Amsterdam was also hospitalised after being hit by a tree.
In The Hague, a tree hit tram lines, causing some disruption to services. Dozens of flights have been cancelled at Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport.
The strong winds have also brought kite surfers to the Dutch beaches to take advantage of the weather.
The KNMI weather bureau issued a code orange weather warning for Dutch coastal regions on Wednesday morning, including Zuid-Holland, Noord-Holland, Friesland, Groningen and the Wadden islands. The wind is expected to die down in the early afternoon.
