Transport lobby group Transport en Logistiek Nederland has called for inner-city engine emissions to be eliminated by 2025.

The organisation said the measure was necessary to achieve the target of cutting CO2 emissions to 50% of their 2015 level by 2030, the Financieele Dagblad reported on Monday.

TLN chairman Arthur van Dijk wants the transport sector to take the initiative on sustainability rather than to be forced to adhere to regulations imposed by authorities. ‘We expect to be able to service the larger cities without CO2 emissions by 2025,’ he said.

But it remains impossible to provide electric transport between cities at present. Van Dijk said government subsidies will be necessary to adjust to the use of biofuels in the run-up to 2030.

The TLN chairman stipulated that there must be at least two suppliers of emissionless trucks and vans in order to meet demand on time. He added the 40 largest cities must submit their plans for the situation after 2025 by next year at the latest so that transport companies can ready their business models.
