The six-month guarantee given by members of the Bovag garage association on second-hand cars is to be stopped on the orders of the Dutch central bank, the Financieele Dagblad said on Wednesday.

The cost of the guarantee is included in the sales price and entitles buyers to free repairs if there are problems with their car within six months of purchase. Some 6,000 second hand car dealers are part of the scheme.

The paper says the central bank considers the guarantee to be an insurance policy and can, therefore, only be given by licenced insurance companies.

Bovag officials now plan to meet to decide what to do next. Until then, garages will continue to extend the guarantee until there is an alternative, a spokesman told the paper.

One option would be to offer a guarantee through Bovag’s insurance arm Bovemij, the FD said.
