The Schiphol airport authority says it expects to process a record 234,000 passengers on Monday as the holiday peak season hits.

In total, 78,000 people will fly off on holiday, 71,000 will return home and 81,000 will transfer to other flights, the airport said. Some 12.4 million people will fly via Schiphol this summer.

The airport has been forced to draft in extra staff and military police officers to cope with long queues at security and check-in desks. People are also being requested to come to the airport two hours in advance for European and three hours for continental flights.

During the May school holidays, some people missed their flights after waiting up to three hours to pass through routine checks.
