Name of SS member will be removed from war monument before May 4

The name of a member of the Dutch SS will be removed from a war monument in the Gelderland village of Enspijk, the Volkskrant reports.
The name was mistakenly added to the monument nine years ago where it was discovered by amateur historian Richard van der Velde who told the council of the mistake. The information never arrived on the mayor’s desk until last week, however, when Van der Velde reported the matter again.
The name of the SS member, Barendinus van Doorn, will not be visible on remembrance day, the council said. The name will either be removed before May 4 or, failing that, taped off.
The case comes in the wake of a similar case in Leidschendam-Voorburg where local historians found three names belonging to SS members and the name of a black market profiteer, and the discovery of the name of a nazi photographer on the wall of the Hollandse Schouwburg in Amsterdam.
According to the institute for war and genocide studies NIOD mistakes of this type very rarely happen on monuments of recent date. ‘It happened more often directly after the war, as in the case of the Hollandse Schouwburg, when information was scarce. But with later monuments names should always be checked,’ he told the AD .
