Amsterdam may be poised to ban mopeds from the cycle lanes but a new start-up is planning to bring pay-as-you-drive electric scooters to the city streets later this year.

The company wants to locate dozens of electric scooters around the city from July which can be reserved online and cost 30 cents a minute to use.

The entrepreneurs behind the start-up, named Felyx, say they were inspired by car sharing schemes like Car2Go, but that scooters have one big advantage – you don’t need a parking place. The team have brought in some €700,000 from investors and hope to raise the rest via crowdfunding.

If Amsterdam does press ahead with the cycle track ban, and scooter users are required to wear a helmet, the scooters will be fitted with one under the passenger seat.

Users will be required to register in advance and must live in Amsterdam to do so to make sure tourists don’t take to the roads, the Parool said.
