Giro555 African famine charity campaign raises €30m so far
Wednesday’s day of action for the Giro555 charity campaign has raised €30m so far, broadcaster NOS said on Thursday.
The money will be used for famine relief efforts in southern Sudan, northeast Nigeria, Somali and Yemen, as well as to provide water and products to improve hygiene.
All day a panel of celebrities manned the phones to accept donations and fund raising efforts were organised all over the country.
The campaign for Africa is part of the Giro555 initiative, the bank account which Dutch aid groups use to collect funds. The last campaign, two years ago, raised €25m for victims of the Nepal earthquake.
The final total raised in this year’s campaign, which started last weekend, is likely to be considerably higher as some fund raising efforts are still ongoing, NOS said.
