Campaign trail: Wilders back on the streets, income tax call

March 2, 2017

The Netherlands will elect a new government in just 13 days time and the campaign is heating up. Here’s a round-up of the latest news.

Wilders back on the street

PVV leader Geert Wilders has decided to take his campaign back to the streets after stopping public appearances last week following a security scare. Support for the party has plunged in recent weeks, and it is now level pegging with the ruling VVD.

Walkabouts are now planned in three towns and Wilders has also given interviews to gossip magazines Story and PrivĂ©. He will appear on the children’s television news show, on pop radio channel 538 and two major television debates.

Income tax plea

The next government should make serious work of simplifying the complicated system of income tax rules and regulations, two tax experts say in Thursday’s Financieele Dagblad.

None of the parties include a major overhaul in their manifestos but there is a real need for reform, Koen Caminada and Leo Stevens say in law journal Weekblad Fiscaal Recht.

The current income tax system dates from 2001 and there are dozens of rules, tax breaks, bonuses and income-dependent benefits which need work, the tax experts say.
