Dutch greenhouse growers expanding at fast pace
Dutch greenhouse growers are investing millions of euros in expansion, the Financieele Dagblad said on Thursday.
The Netherlands currently has greenhouses covering 9,500 hectares of land, mainly in the western part of the country.
‘The market has been at a standstill for the past six years and now everybody is expanding,’ said Wouter Kuiper director of greenhouse builder KUBO. He attributes the expansion to higher prices for bell peppers, tomatoes and winter vegetables.
Henk Verbakel of Havecon, one of Holland’s largest greenhouse construction firms, said orders are five times higher than normal. ‘It’s all happening at once and we are asking some growers to postpone their plans until next year,’ he said.
