The police officer who was run over during the New Year festivities has died in hospital, The Hague police said on Facebook.

The 36-year-old had been in a coma in intensive care since the incident in The Hague.

The driver of the car was a 27-year-old woman who had not been drinking and is not thought to have acted deliberately. The police investigation into exactly what happens is continuing.

National police chief Erik Akerboom said he is shocked by the death. ‘This news will hit every police officer hard and shows again how vulnerable we are when doing our jobs,’ he said.
