Police and justice officials handed out over 9.4 million fines for traffic offences such as jumping red lights or speeding last year.
This is a rise of 1.5 million on 2015, when the figures were distorted by police industrial action.
The majority of fines – eight million – went to people who were driving too fast and whose cars were caught on speed cameras. The average speeding ticket was €58.
