More farmers turn to organic farming, sharp rise in dairy and poultry
There has been a 10% increase in the amount of land dedicated to organic farming in the Netherlands over the past five years, national statistics office CBS said on Monday.
The increase comes from a rise in arable and market gardening, the CBS said.
In addition, the number of organic livestock farms has gone up sharply. There are now almost a quarter more organic poultry farms than five years ago and the number of organic dairy cattle has risen by 54%.
However, although the organic poultry flock is now made up of some three million birds, that is still just 3% of the total number of hens in the Netherlands. And organic dairy cows account for just 2% of the total dairy herd.
