Heavy snow causes problems in the east, strong winds later today

Heavy snow is causing problems on the roads in the east and central parts of the Netherlands and there were overnight traffic jams following accidents on the A1 and the A2, traffic information service VID said early on Friday morning.

Up to 12 centimetres of snow fell in Arnhem and the surrounding areas, according to some reports, but the temperature is rising and the snow is expected to thaw quickly.

Nevertheless, conditions are hazardous in eastern parts and motorists face jams and delays on roads in the Twente region, the ANWB motoring organisation said.

Strong winds are expected to pick up later in the day bringing more rail and snow showers. There may also be some thunder, weather bureau KNMI reported.

The gales, possibly storm force on the coast, are set to continue into the evening and may cause problems for evening commuters.

The weekend is set to be windy with some wintry showers but the wind will swing to the east on Monday, bringing colder, dry weather and heavy frost at night, the KNMI said.
