Support for the anti-Islam PVV appears to have fallen slightly following a strong rise over the past two months, according to the latest poll of polls, published by broadcaster NOS.

The poll gives the PVV between 19.3% and 22% of the vote – equivalent to 29 to 33 seats in parliament. The previous poll of polls in December said the party was on target to win 31-37 seats in the 150 seat parliament if there was a general election tomorrow.

This means Geert Wilders’ one-member party remains the biggest in the polls but its lead over the right-wing Liberal VVD has been reduced. The poll, an amalgam of five different opinion polls, puts the ruling VVD on 23 to 27 seats.

Pollster Tom Louwerse says the recent rise in PVV support was due to Wilder’s trial for inciting discrimination and the seasonal discussion about Zwarte Piet. Both issues are now out of the public eye, Louwerse told the broadcaster.

He also points out that the differences between the opinion polls is wide. Kantar Public shows a large drop in PVV support, Maurice de Hond a slight reduction and EenVandaag sees no change.

The next three parties – the Christian Democrats, D66 and Groenlinks would have 13 to 17 seats. RTL plans to invite the four biggest parties to a major televised debate at the beginning of February.

The poll of polls shows no real change in support for the Labour party (PvdA) which recently appointed social affairs minister Lodewijk Asscher as its new campaign leader. The PvdA, which is part of the current coalition, would win 10 to 12 seats, the poll shows.
